Job Title: Style Shop Instructor
Teach Fashion Design to the Youth of Third Ward and Southeast Houston!
About this Position:
The Style Shop Coordinator’s primary role is to participate in fulfilling the mission of Workshop Houston: to provide youth with creative, technical, and educational resources. To achieve this, the Style Shop Instructor will: 1) run Workshop Houston's Style Shop program, which teaches fashion design and fashion creation to middle and high school aged youth; 2) build and maintain positive relationships with participants and their parents and teachers; 3) work with all program staff to execute and document Workshop Houston’s programs so that they can be effectively evaluated to be helping students to succeed academically and personally; 4) participate in and assist with Workshop Houston-wide activities and events.
About the Style Shop:
The Style Shop is a fashion design program where middle and high school students learn creative and technical skills in a wide variety of areas including computer graphics, screen printing, sewing, and drawing. The shop is open after school and during the summer as part of Workshop Houston’s Middle School Program and High School Program.

Style Shop Operation
Act as a responsible and positive role model at all times; be a leader in creating constructive learning environment in the Style Shop;
Keep Style Shop clean and organized and supplies stocked.
Teach Style Shop Curriculum under the direction of Style Shop Coordinator and Program Director.
Participate in shop and curriculum evaluation and improvement
Have a passion for mentoring youth.
Understand the importance and fragility involved with handling the Social and Emotional Learning of youth.
Willing to receive and attend training for Mentoring and Social and Emotional Learning.
Assist in student recruitment and enrollment.
Participate in field trips and special events as needed
Other activities as assigned or taken on and approved by the Program Coordinator
Attend periodic Workshop Houston publicity and fundraising events
Represent WSH positively and convey our mission
Style Shop Specific Skills:
In the Style Shop you will be responsible for teaching students sewing, computer design, drawing, and other fashion skills. We are looking for someone with a strong interest in and knowledge of these areas, we believe that your passion for the material will inspire the student’s own passions. To be eligible for this position you should be able to demonstrate a familiarity with all of these areas and a strong working knowledge of at least several of them. The specific skills you will be responsible for are:
Using a sewing machine to create finished garments
Work from patterns and create new patterns
Proficient in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator
Generally familiar with windows operating system
Minimum Associate’s Degree or Professional Experience
Strong commitment to youth education and the Workshop Houston Mission
Experience working with middle school students
Interest in learning new skills
Organized, able to schedule own time and to prioritize tasks
Flexible, able to adapt to change quickly and make do with sometimes limited resources
This is a part- time position for 25/hrs a week. Hourly rate dependent on experience. Hours may include 2pm - 8pm Monday - Friday and 12pm - 5pm on Saturdays.
